The Lake at the Bottom of the Sky

You are the night-shift crew on the Sundrop, a small ice cream boat that drifts Mirabel Lake after sunset, serving the last stragglers on the summer docks. The motor cut out an hour ago and the Sundrop has drifted to the middle of the lake. It is very late, the water is a black mirror, and the stars are absurdly bright. Somewhere in the boat's clutter there is a signal mirror — the kind you're supposed to use for emergencies — but you've never needed it before.
