You are the summer helper at Briny Bliss Saltwater Taffy, a candy shop wedged between the ice-cream shack and the surf-rental on the Coquina Bay boardwalk. It is eleven minutes to noon. Señora Vega, the landlord, has just marched in and announced she is doubling the rent — unless you can produce a proper welcome gift before the noon ferry horn sounds. Your boss Delia has fled to the stockroom in a panic, leaving you in charge of the shop floor. The gift must be assembled from whatever's on hand. No pressure.
